Our school in the community

All classes in the school are able to access the community as part of their educational programs. The programs are developed across the school, with the older students spending more of their time in these activities than the younger students.

Any community based program will be based on a classroom curriculum program and/or a student's Individual Curriculum Plan. The structure and sequence of the activity should be developmental, socially valid, set in an instructional setting and be transferred to a real activity in the student's life.

Ultimately, the aim is for the students to access the community after they leave school. Part of the learning process for some students involves travel training by whatever means to access the community. As well as having two school buses, Kuraby Special School has close access to the train line and public buses. Students are encouraged to have a GO Card and as they mature will have more independence with this skill.
